Keeping Pacific County Beaches Clean

1/31/2013

Long Beach, Washington - AmeriCorps Member Leanna Reuss, in coordination with the Pacific County Emergency Management Agency (PCEMA) and the City of Long Beach, is recruiting volunteers in an on-going effort to assist in cleaning Pacific County beaches of tsunami and other marine debris. Leanna can be contacted at Long Beach City Hall, 115 Bolstad West, Long Beach, WA 98631. Garbage bags and maps of Pacific County beaches along with guidelines regarding different types of debris are available for volunteer use.

The tsunami that hit Japan began to deposit debris on the shores of North America in early 2012, but debris has been inundating the coastline for years. Leanna is encouraging people from all over to participate to clean beaches in Pacific County. From residents to visitors, everyone who is willing to help is welcome.

Leanna is serving at Long Beach City Hall through August 15, 2013, and is in city hall Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Even if you are unsure about volunteering, residents and visitors are welcome to drop by city hall and ask questions about the clean up or the tsunami.

For more information about volunteering or to schedule weekend dates in advance, contact Leanna Reuss at 360-642-4482 or email lreuss@co.pacific.wa.us. Leanna is also available to speak to civic or non-profit organizations about tsunami debris and how to volunteer. To learn more about tsunami marine debris visit http://marinedebris.noaa.gov/tsunamidebris/.

A National Day of Service: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

1/11/2013

South Bend, Washington – As a part of a National Day of Service, AmeriCorps Members Lea Reuss and Kirsten Harvill will be promoting their AmeriCorps projects on Monday, January 21st from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Dennis Company in both Long Beach and Raymond.

Kirsten and Lea serve with the Pacific County Emergency Management Agency and have projects geared at disaster preparedness public education and volunteer coordination for tsunami debris cleanup.

In 1994 Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a national day of service. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service; AmeriCorps Members view it as a “day on, not a day off.” The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. During this holiday, many AmeriCorps and community members organize projects designed to give back and strengthen their communities.

For more information about the AmeriCorps projects or the MLK Day of Service please contact AmeriCorps Member Lea Reuss at 642-4482 or lreuss@co.pacific.wa.us or AmeriCorps Member Kirsten Harvill at 875-9409 or kharvill@co.pacific.wa.us.
