The purpose of this event is to remember the Japanese people and applaud their resilience and recovery after the enormous 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami of two years ago. In addition, the agencies intend to increase knowledge of Japanese culture and demonstrate that Pacific County does not blame the Japanese for the tsunami debris that has washed ashore. In fact, the people of the community view these items and their origin as interesting and educational. The agenda for the day includes:
- Welcome, crane display, and moment of silence
- Speech from the Mayor of Long Beach
- Reading of Consulate-General of Japan’s Statement
- Director of the World Kite Museum will welcome kite flyers
- Kite flyers will fly their kites at the beach
As a final note, please be aware that Daylight Savings Time begins the morning of the 10th. The clocks will “spring forward” turning 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. If you have questions or need additional information about the event. Pease contact Lea Reuss at 360-642-4482 or email lreuss@co.pacific.wa.us.
